Hint: use the bibliographies of the reference works
and your textbook concerning
your topic to find other scholarly books and articles.
Books:
When searching for books at Gutman Library you have to
search PhilaFind. PhilaFind is Gutman Library's online library catalog. Click
here to connect to PhilaFind. The Gutman Library web site contains information on how
to locate books using PhilaFind (How to Find Books At Gutman Library).
When searching for books you will want to searching using
"subject keyword." This searches the subject heading field of the
book's record.
Books on the art and architecture of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia,
China, India, Africa, Greece, and Native American are on reserve under
"History of Architecture I and II." These books have been placed on
reserve since they are the standard texts for these areas.
Another place to search for books is
WorldCat.
WorldCat is a part of FirstSearch. WorldCat searches the holdings of almost all
of the libraries in the United States and Canada.
Journals:
There are three electronic databases worth
checking for articles for this project. The databases are Art Index, Avery
Index, and the Design and Applied Arts Index. Below are links to the databases
and brief descriptions of each.
Art Index
Indexes over 270 journals. Subject areas include fine art, art history,
architecture, industrial design, interior design, graphic arts. Covers Sept.
1984 to present [earlier years available in printed format].
Avery Index
Indexes approximately 800 journals by Columbia
University’ Avery Architecture and Fine Arts
Library, including architectural design, history
and practice, historic preservation, interior
design, and urban planning. Best database to
use for this project.
Design and Applied Arts Index
Design and Applied Arts Index coverage begins in 1971, however most articles
date from 1987 forward. Subject coverage is expansive and includes industrial
design, architecture, interior design, and graphic design.
The next step: Once you have located citations from print
bibliographies and the electronic databases, listed above, you will need to see
if Gutman Library owns the periodicals. At Gutman Library there are three
different places to look for periodical holdings. The Gutman Library web site
contains information on how
to locate periodicals at Gutman Library.
Getting materials Gutman Library does not own; use Interlibrary Loan:
Interlibrary
Loan is a service that will get you books and articles Gutman does not own
from other libraries. Allow seven days for the
materials to arrive. Most materials arrive sooner depending where we borrow from. Both journals and books can be requested through
Interlibrary Loan. If you need books sooner
than seven days consider using
PALCI EZ-Borrow.
