How to Add and Remove Programs From Your Computer

1. Open the start menu and click on Control Panel, in Windows XP it will be on the right pane in the middle with other system tools.

2. Look for an icon in the menu that appears that says Add or Remove Programs.

3. The window that appears will show you all the software listed on your computer. You have several options here to Add or Remove a program, Add or Remove Components of a selected program, or set Program Access options to a program.

Change or Remove Programs
Current screen, allows you to browse installed software and alter its properties or remove it from your computer
Add New Programs
Allows you to select a CD to install a program from, or Update windows
Add/Remove Windows Components
Allows you to alter the installed components from Windows, or install new ones
Set Program Access and Defaults
Allows you to select a specific program when you ask windows to perform a specific action, like choosing what program to use to browse the internet by default

Removing an Installed Application

1. From the list, select which program you wish to remove.

2. Once highlighted, it will display more detailed information, like how big it is and how often you use it, along with a button to Change/Remove it. Select this button.

3. Commonly, it will prompt you with a choice to either modify the installed features of the program, or to remove it. Select Remove and hit Next. It will then remove the software and prompt you once finished.

Installing an Application

1. Enter the CD or disk of the software you wish to install onto the computer.

2. Select Add New Programs from the toolbar on the left.

3. Select to Add a program from CD-ROM or floppy disk.

4. Click Next after you have inserted the software.

5. Windows will automatically locate the file needed to install the software, it will display that file on the next screen for your review. If it is appropiate, click finish to launch that file found, which will guide you through the software-specific installation program. Since it is different for every software, follow the on-screen instructions or consult with the installation information provided by the software company to complete the installation.
