  • Checking Internet Connectivity
    • When connecting the CAT5 cable into the Data Jack make sure that you plug the CAT5 cable into the red socket. The other socket (as shown in the picture below) is for the telephone cable.

    • Picture of computer's jack connection (Located in the back of a desktop / side or back of laptops). If you are encountering connection problems, look to make sure that the CAT5 cal be is connect to the back of your PC and into the right port of the Data Jack.

     

     

    • Picture of CAT5 cable connected to the PC. ( Notice the lights are turned on. This means that the LAN connection is working) If you encounter problems where the connection is not working, look to make sure these lights are turned on.

     

    • Where Network and Internet Connections is located on the Control Panel:

    • After you have clicked on Network Connections a window showing your connections should become visible. Click on Local Area Connection and then look at its details in the Details section in the left margin. (as shown in image below) The information in the details section tells you what your IP address is.

     

    • If you are experiencing problems with your Local Area Connection, right-click the Local Area Connection icon and then click on Repair. This should repair issues that you may be encountering.

     

    • After you click on Repair a window should pop-up repairing the Connection. When it is complete Click on close and you have completed repairing your Local Area Connection.

     

    • How to run "ipconfig":
      • Click on Start, then click on Run

     

    • The Run window should pop-up. In the Run window type in "cmd" (as shown in image below) and then click on OK

     

    • A DOS prompt window should open up. When it does type in " ipconfig " (as shown in image below)

     

    • After you have typed ipconfig in, click on enter and then the IP address of your computer should be displayed. (in this example the IP address is 172.24.2.94)

     

    • Different types of IP addresses.
        • An IP address that starts with 169.XX.X.XX means that there is not LAN / Internet connection present on the computer.
        • An IP address that starts with 172.XX.X.XX means that there is a LAN / Internet connection present on the computer.
        • An IP address that starts with 192.XX.X.XX means that there is a Wireless Internet connection present on the computer.

         

    • The different IP addresses that will be found when you use your personal computer on campus.
      • If you are using your computer in the dorms on campus, your IP address should start with a 172.XX.X.XX or 169.XX.X.XX. Which means either you have a working LAN / Internet connection or one that is not working correctly.
      • If you are using your computer in the dorms on campus and your IP address is a 192.XX.X.XX then you have a wireless internet connection. Since personal Wireless Routers are not allowed in the dorms the internet connection on your computer will not work properly.
      • If you use your own computer in PhilaU's Library, Mott Walkway and AnD there is a Wireless Router (provided by the school present). In which case you can connect your Laptop's to the school network using this wireless router. Your IP address should look something like 192.XX.X.XX
