How to Connect to Your Home Directory From Off-Campus Using VPN

Downloading the Client

1. Click Here to Download the Client.

2. Authentication: Type your username and password and click on the OK button.

3.  Click on the Run button to begin download.

4. It will now download the VPN.

5. Click on the 'Run' button again to begin installation.

Unzip

1. Choose the location in which to save the files and click the Unzip button. To make it easy leave it at C:\cisco vpn.

3. Click the Close button, then in the Start menu, choose Run... and in the command line, write C:\cisco vpn\setup.exe

Installing

1. Upon opening the Setup program, click Next to proceed with the Setup and accecpt the License agreement by clicking Yes. Choose a directory to install in, or accecpt the default and click Next.

2. Choose what the name of the program group will be called in the start menu, or accecpt the default and click Next.

3. Allow the progam to install and perform the necessary actions.

4. During installation a AntiSpyware notice might appear notifying you of a change. Since this is a result of installing the VPN client, click Ignore and Remember this action so that the notice will not appear again based on this software.

5. The Setup program will then ask you to restart your computer to finish the Installation. Choose Yes and click Finish.

Connecting to the VPN Client

1. After the computer has restarted, click on the Start menu, go to Programs, Cisco Systems VPN Client, VPN Client.

2. At the top of the dialogue box click on the New button.

3. Fill out the form as follows:

  • For 'Connection Entry' and 'Description', enter 'Philadelphia University'
  • For 'Host', enter 'vpn.philau.edu'
  • For 'Name', enter 'pixvpn'
  • For 'Password' and 'Confirm Password', enter 'cisco'
  • Finally click 'Save

4. Philadelphia University will now appear as a connection entry, select this entry and click the Connect button in the upper left.

5. Type in student\yourusername and your password and click OK.

6. The Lock in the lower right hand side of the taskbar indicates that you are not connected to the Philadelphia University network.

Mapping Your Home Directory

1. Right click on the My Computer icon and click on Map Network Drive.

2. Select any available drive (H: is commonly used for the Home Directory), in the folder box type in \\athena\home\yourusername, and click Finish.

3. For Username type student\yourusername, then type in your password and click OK.

4. You Home Directory can now be found in the My Computer folder if the folder does not pop-up automatically

5. When you are finished using the Philadelphia University Network, disconnect from the VPN by right clicking on the Lock in the lower right side of the taskbar, and click Disconnect.
